The Teaching of Mathematics at The Pilgrim School

As part of our commitment to your child's education we will continue to develop mathematics.  The National Numeracy Strategy forms the backbone of our mathematics curriculum.  Through out teaching of Numeracy we aim to equip children to be independent thinks.  We believe that independent thought is best achieved by providing opportunities for the exploration of order pattern and relationships in number.  We do not view mathematical development as a linear process; our curriculum is flexible and is adapted to meet the needs of individual children.  That flexibility is based around the following principles for development: -

  1. A period of free exploration
  2. Practical activities preceding paper and pencil tasks.
  3. Language and understanding being valued.
  4. Application and practice.
